Leerdoelen  Explain basic techniques of data collection, descriptive and elementary inferential statistics using such notions as, “mean”, “correlation”, “causation”, “hypothesis”, “sample”, “confidence interval”, “statistically significant”. Competently  gather data,  display them in a perspicuous way,  describe data in an efficient way,  compute and evaluate confidence intervals,  perform simple tests of statistical significance Communicate about topics that are relevant to society by actively applying concepts and tools basic descriptive and inferential statistics and reflect on such applications. Effectively collaborate and cooperate with peer students and academic experts while applying the methods learned in this course. Document their work and report it in an accessible manner to fellow students, explain the chosen presentationstyle, and respond competently to questions and criticism. Exploit the acquired methodological skills to highlight potential limitations of claims made on the basis of scientific findings and point out possible fallacies in arguments used to support such claims. 

Omschrijving  This course forms the first part of the Research Methods learning line and is compulsory for all University College students. The central aim of this course is to make students competent in the use of certain basic scientific methods, notably statistical ones. Students learn to distinguish between different types of data and become familiar with techniques of data display and description, including basic statistical concepts such as mean, standard deviation, correlation r, and sampling distribution. The importance and challenge of distinguishing between causal and noncausal associations is expounded and highlighted. Students also learn how to collect their own data and are introduced to sampling procedures as well as the rationale behind randomized control trials. Finally, probabilities are introduced as conceptual tools to enable statistical inference, and the basic ideas underlying confidence intervals and significance testing are developed.
