Omschrijving As a sequel to the BA1 course New Testament Text and Cultural Context that deals with the Gospels, Acts, (some) Letters and Revelation, this module is fully devoted to Paul. The module consists of two parts, the first of which 1) provides a first approach to Paul’s letters. After providing an in-depth introduction to Paul and the main topics of research, the course offers a first general approach to the Pauline corpus that focuses on the analysis of 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians and Romans. The second part, 2) deals with Paul’s cosmology and anthropology. After an overview of the cosmological views of the Pauline corpus and the wider cultural context of the Greco-Roman world, the course centers on the reception of Paul’s ideas in the following centuries, both in the Apocalypse of Paul (Nag Hammadi codex V,2.) and in the Visio Pauli. Attention is paid to ancient cosmological views by Plato, Eudoxus, Xenocrates, Aristotle, and Ptolemy. The module then turns to the study of Paul’s Anthropology, especially Romans 6-8. In order to do so it first provides a wide overview of the anthropological views available in Paul’s cultural context, and offers a detailed analysis of the monistic, bipartite and tripartite anthropological frameworks.
