Leerdoelen
  • Students are able to explain the emergence and development of early Christianity and its earliest literature in the context of contemporary Judaism and the surrounding Greco-Roman world.
  • Students are able to understand the genre and development of the NT Gospels, as well as their individual characteristics.
  • Students are able to identify both the diversity and unity of the Catholic letters, especially James and their historical context.
  • The students are able to recognize the early Christian diversity as represented by non-canonical Gospels (Thomas, of Truth, and of Mary); Acts (Apocryphal Acts of Apostles), Letters (to Flora; to Rheginus) Apocalypses (of Peter; of Paul).
Omschrijving This course is about the earliest Christian writings and studies them in their original cultural contexts, in order to explain the successful emergence of Christianity in the ancient, Greco-Roman world. It focuses both on the New Testament, as well as on many other contemporary Early Christian writings that did not make it into the Bible.

While the first half of the course roughly focuses on the New Testament corpus, covering the canonical Gospels, Acts, Letters and Revelation; the second half of the course mainly centers on their non-canonical counter-parts, namely Gospels, apocryphal Acts, Letters and apocalypses.

All Early Christian writings are placed in their natural cultural, social and textual environments.

A course on academic presentation skills is part of this course. As a preparation for their presentations during this and other modules, students get to know both the theoretical principles and the practice of presenting in front of an academic public.

(3 x 2 uur. Voorbereiding: bestuderen van de relevante hoofdstukken uit The New Testament van Ehrman voor aanvang van elk college. Tijdens de colleges krijgen de studenten commentaar op Ehrman, nadere uitleg over de onderwerpen en een diepgaander begrip door gezamenlijke lezing van de bronnen in vert)

(The final mark for this course consists of three elements: a) QARQ and participation: 30%. b) Commenting on readings in Perusall: 20%. c) Written examination (take-home exam): 50 %)
