Leerdoelen After following this course a student should be able to:
1 - Describe the different types and patterns of innovation, giving special attention to the knowledge processes associated to product and process innovations.
2 - Reproduce the factors that explain the importance of conducting both an internal and external analysis of firms’ capabilities to the formation of a technology strategy.
3 - Compare the different methods available (both quantitative and qualitative) to evaluate innovation projects.
4 - Identify the factors firms use to evaluate the collaboration opportunities.
5 - Distinguish the mechanisms a firm has available to protect an innovative technology, the means by which the mechanisms can be put into effect and their limitations.
6 - Predict how different dimensions of organizational resources and capabilities affect a firm’s ability to innovate.
7 - Reflect on the different metrics used to evaluate new product effectiveness and innovation performance.
8 - Apply the concepts of knowledge management and innovation to the analysis of companies’ strategies.
Omschrijving The Outlining and Implementing Innovation Strategy course (OIIS) approaches the subject of innovation management as a strategic process. The course is organized to reflect the strategic management process implemented by firms: from assessing the competitive dynamics of a context, to strategy formulation, to strategy implementation.

Students have to perform two assignments in the OIIS course:
- Assignment 1: Outlining innovation strategy assignment. Description and critical analysis of the implementation of an existing innovation strategy.
- Assignment 2: Technology innovation assignment. An innovation strategy of a specific, novel technology or scientific development that can be implemented in a specific business environment or a specific company has to be described. This assignment is carried out in the context of the IEM Learning Communities.
In the ideal setting both projects relate to the same company or business sector.
