Leerdoelen Acquiring knowledge on the analysis and design of model-based control systems.
After this course the student should be able:
1. to construct simple models of electro-mechanical dynamical systems based on first principles using the Euler-Lagrange formalism.
2. to differentiate between linear and nonlinear dynamical systems and perform a stability analysis of nonlinear systems via linearization.
3. to analyze the dynamic behavior of continuous-time linear
time-invariant systems.
4. to analyze closed-loop systems by using Nyquist plots and Bode plots.
5. to design controllers by using eigenvalue assignment in the state space domain and basic loop shaping in the frequency domain.
6. to construct simulation models of dynamical control systems using Matlab, and to analyze and design control laws for simple laboratory experiments.
After this course, the student will also be able to solve problems related to the learning objectives above.
Omschrijving In this module classic control theory will be discussed, particularly for first and second-order systems. Both the analysis and the design will be discussed from a mathematical perspective.

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from Signals and Systems, BSc Industrial Engineering and Management.
The course unit prepares students for Mechatronics (BSc IEM), Digital and Hybrid Control Systems (BSc IEM), Analysis and control of smart systems (MSc IEM), Robotics (MSc IEM), in which the learning objectives attained are required as prior knowledge.
Opmerkingen Assessment criteria and method for determining the final mark for the course unit:
a. assessment criteria: In the written exam 6 problems are proposed, with one being optional and giving extra points. Each problem comprises several sub-problems. Students have to provide solutions to the sub-problems. Alternatively, 5 problems are proposed, each one with an extra sub-problem giving extra points.
Points for each sub-problem is proportional to the difficulty of the sub-problem. The total points are then normalized in a scale from 1 to 10. To be admitted to the exam, the students have to pass the practical assignment.
b. marking scheme: The final mark is determined by the written exam only. To be admitted to the exam and to be able to pass the course, the student should attend at least all but one of the exercise classes, and should have completed all three practical assessments, turned in the reports for them on time and have them judged satisfactory.
