Leerdoelen After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the objectives, principles and development of international investment treaties relating to energy investments and trade, with special reference to WTO/GATT and the Energy Charter Treaty.
- Assess the impact of the EU regulation on external energy trade and investment.
- Appraise the relevant international dispute settlement mechanisms in energy investment and trade.
- Engage in an international academic discourse on energy investment and trade on the level of fellow students and colleagues.
- Apprehend the prospects of an international professional career in the energy sector.
Omschrijving This course discusses the main principles relating to energy investments and energy trade. The focus will be on the main principles of WTO/GATT and the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT). It will in particular address the issue of investment protection provided by several bilateral investment treaties, WTO/GATT and ECT as well as the rules governing energy trade and transit. Given the new powers of the EU Commission, also the issue of EU external energy trade will be discussed. The students will also be familiarized with the most relevant dispute settlement mechanisms. In addition, there are lectures that will be delivered by experts from the European Commission and the Energy Charter Treaty Secretariat, which will be held in Brussels as part of a two days visit
