Leerdoelen After this course the student is able:
To explain why individual longitudinal analysis is an important addition to the analysis of group data, and to explain the differences between both.
To explain relevant characteristics of individual time series (variability, trajectory shapes, transitions, attractors, autocorrelation).
To apply different techniques to visualize individual longitudinal data.
To apply simple techniques to analyze individual data with regard to trajectory shapes, (changes in) variability, transitions, attractors.
To apply autocorrelation and cross-correlation techniques and to explain when and how they can be applied.
To understand the purpose of different designs for single-case intervention studies and to be able to explain which design to choose in which situation.
To explain the complex dynamical systems approach, and to understand the results and conclusions of papers in which non-linear time-series and complexity methods are applied.
Omschrijving In this course we demonstrate and teach techniques that are applicable to analyze individual longitudinal data sets. The focus is on answering practical research questions that address individual processes in the domains of education, talent development and (problematic) development, such as the evaluation of interventions, training and learning methods, analyzing individual trajectories (stability, change, indications of transitions), and analyzing the difference between individual trajectories. The aim of the course is to provide students with relatively simple tools that they can apply during their master thesis, and in their later work in practical settings in school, coaching, and health care settings. The lectures will address the following topics:
Introduction, Short theoretical background of the importance of individual longitudinal analysis.
Visualisation as an important technique for the analysis of individual time series of data. Even without statistical tests a visualisation provides relevant information about the trajectory and the patterns of change.
Simple techniques to analyze the shape of trajectories, and the co-development of variables over time.
Auto- and cross-correlation; auto- and cross-lagged regression, design and analysis of single-case intervention studies
Non-linear analysis: the structure of variability, recurrence analysis, pink noise, resilience, modelling. Methods are presented that students are not expected to master, but are expected to understand when used in literature.

Opmerkingen Each meeting consists of one hour lecture, and one hour hands-on practicum. Exercises aim to train the students in applying the techniques, and are evaluated with pass/fail only.
