Leerdoelen The main goal of this course:
To gain knowledge and get acquainted with practical skills regarding intake assessment and evidence-based interventions (face-to-face and Internet-based) aimed at children, adolescents and adults. After this course students are able to:
- describe the various phases in cognitive and behavioral therapies
- describe the assessment and some evidence-based interventions (internet-based and face-to-face) for common mental health problems in children, adolescents and adults
- know which type of information to get from a patient when building a cognitive case conceptualization or a behavioral functional analysis
- work out a cognitive case conceptualization and a behavioral functional analysis, and describe its use to a patient, their family, or a colleague,
- design a registration assignment;
- formulate a treatment plan and treatment goals,
- provide a CBT treatment rational for some specific interventions for common mental health problems,
- justify choices made with regard to assessment, interventions and therapeutic contact (i.e. choice of medium, style and content),
- be familiar with some basic skills for applying basic CBT elements, for instance in the context of an internet-based preventive cognitive therapy program for relapse prevention of depression in adults
- reflect on their own learning process from the perspective of a therapist and client
- reflect on the pros and cons of internet-based interventions for mental health
- develop a short module for use in the context of an online platform for mental health (like an example video explaining a technique)
Omschrijving The course takes place in groups of maximum 20 students and is made up of two half days per week. Most sessions contain a short theoretical introduction of a specific intervention, followed by a practical part, in which students can practice and improve their skills using case material (including footage of treatments from the database PsycTherapy) with corresponding assignments, including the application of e-health interventions. Students will practice in role-plays with different phases of the therapeutic process, starting with "introduction and assessment", then moving onto "formulating and executing a treatment plan", and ending with "treatment evaluation". The focus is on the following cognitive behavioral interventions: exposure (anxiety disorders), behavioral activation (depression), habit reversal (unwanted habits), identifying, challenging and modifying dysfunctional beliefs and, finally, parent training. The use of Internet-Based interventions is discussed. Students will also experiment with applying the learned skills in the context of Internet-based interventions. For instance, they make a short video explaining a treatment rationale, for use in an online platform.
An integration between diagnostics/assessments and interventions takes place via the ‘Cognitive therapy practice project’ (CTPP). In CTPP, students will practice with an online preventive cognitive therapy program aimed at the prevention of depressive relapse, from the perspective of a therapist as well as a client. The online treatment is suitable for ‘healthy participants’ and handles topics such as daily hassles, fluctuations in mood, dysfunctional beliefs and automatic negative thoughts. The therapeutic contact between students will take place through role playing exercises in which several forms of media are used (‘blended care’), such as face-to-face meetings, videophoning, and providing online feedback via the platform.
