Leerdoelen | After this module, students: - understand the basics of network analysis, and can use it to reflect on the various meanings of any given psychological topic or concept; - can extract relational data from a research database like PsycINFO, format them using Excel, and graph the results using Gephi; - conduct basic analyses in Gephi to illustrate and make sense of the relations underlying that structure; - can manipulate and interpret the simple digital objects that result; - can think about these objects clearly, as well as what they represent, to identify unexpected and non-obvious but-still-related research opportunities; - will begin to recognize when psychological concepts might belong to several different conceptual territories, and so shift their focus from "informing" about discoveries to "translating" possibly-conflicting interpretations |

Omschrijving | Together, we will explore the use of network analysis as a tool for reflection, and we will thereby develop a theory of psychology as a whole made of many interconnected conceptual parts. In the process, we will also gain new perspectives and a new appreciation for how the various pieces fit together (as well as new insights about how to communicate between them). In our first week, I will introduce you to the method of network analysis, the software that’s most commonly used, and some sources of data for you to explore. In our second week, you will use the resulting digital object to develop the basis for a poster summarizing your findings. You will also read supplementary articles related specifically to your project, and then you will hand in a paper of no more than 1000 words. (This serves as a proposal that could be submitted for peer review for presentation at a conference the following summer.) My goal, ultimately, is to give you access to a new and powerful tool. Network analysis is now gaining influence in psychology, broadly, and having it in your toolbox will likely serve you well no matter where you go in your career. Even simple analyses can provide powerful insights. |
