Leerdoelen | In this hands-on course you will learn to: - Design a computer-based psychology experiment using the software OpenSesame - Manage a research project - Conduct an experiment in a driving simulator - Measure, analyse, and interpret cardiovascular signals (heart rate) and behavioural responses (accuracy and reaction time) - Understand the relation between performance, subjective ratings, and psychophysiological measures |

Omschrijving | The overarching goal of Experimental Skills is to familiarize students with the full workflow of scientific research: managing a research project, designing experiments, collecting data, analysing data, interpreting and communicating results. Practicalities: - This course is recommended for all students who are interested in experimental psychological science. - This course is a good match with the course Programming for Psychologists (PSB3E-M11, semester IIa), although both courses can be taken separately. - A computer room will be available for students throughout the course. This is why the schedule indicates that the course takes place almost every day from 9:00 to 17:00. Attendance at specific moments is required though. - The number of places is limited, so first come, first served! The course consists of three parts. In the first part, you will create a computer-based psychology experiment using the free software OpenSesame. You will collect two datasets with this experiment, and analyse the results. In the second part, you will go into the driving-simulator lab. You will collect cardiovascular data of one of the group members that you will analyse later, and interpret this in relation to (driving) performance and subjective data that will also be collected during the experiment. In the third part, you will again create an experiment. The main difference with the first part is that now you will no longer be provided with exact instructions as to which experiment to create; instead, you will create an experiment that you have designed yourself to answer a research question that you have come up with yourself. This third part is where you can let your creative shine in your own (small) research project! |
