Leerdoelen The students will be able to discuss and summarize the main concepts of modern Solid State Physics (as listed below). The students will be able to identify the relation between the topics studied and their previous physics knowledge (classical mechanics, quantum physics etc..). The students will be able to solve problems of the level of the one proposed in the book by applying basic concepts of solid state physics.

Omschrijving The course aims to introduce students to the main concepts of modern Solid State Physics. It will cover the fundamentals, from crystal structures and diffraction till the nature of the energy bands. The main physical properties of metals, semiconductors as well as the superconductors will be treated quantitatively. Crystal structures; Fundamental types of lattices, Simple crystal structures. Bragg Law. (Chapter 1, Hook and Hall) (Chapter 1, Kittel) Reciprocal space and determination of lattice structures (Chapters 5 and 6 Ashcroft & Mermin) Diffraction of waves by crystals (Chapter 11, Hook and Hall) (Chapter 2, Kittel) Phonons and thermal properties of Crystals (Chapter 2, Hook and Hall) Chapter 4 and Chapter 5, Kittel) Free Electrons in metals (Chapter 3, Hook and Hall) (Chapter 6, Kittel) Energy bands (Chapter 4, Hook and Hall)(Chapter 7 Kittel) Bloch theorem (Chapter 7 Kittel) Semiconductors (Chapter 5, Hook and Hall) Effective mass Intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors Semiconductor devices (Slides and Chapter 6, Hook and Hall) (Chapter 8 Kittel) Superconductivity in pills (Chapter 10, Hook and Hall) (Part of Chapter 10 Kittel (till page 279)) Magnetic properties of materials (Chapter 7 and 8, Hook and Hall) (Chapter 11 and 12 Kittel)
