Leerdoelen To get acquainted with modern developments in atomic physics, in particular the interaction of light and atoms. The student should learn to follow the current scientific discussion in the field.
Omschrijving The techniques for laser cooling and trapping have revolutionized modern atomic physics. The interaction of atoms with light can be used to completely stop atoms and confine them in traps with laser fields. After discussion of the underlying principles the limits of this new technique will be explored. Based on this the impact on precision measurements, the study of degenerate quantum systems (e.g. Bose-Einstein condensation), quantum state engineering and quantum computing will be discussed. Some seminal papers in the field will be discussed in detail.

(The students will be encouraged to ask questions during the lecture. Each week there will be a homework assignment. The solution will be discussed during the lecture.)
