Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) Identify the various types of nuclear reactions and recognize the ones used for nuclear energy production;
2) Distinguish between the energy produced by nuclear fission and radioactive decay;
3) Explain the physical and technical principles of nuclear fission reactors;
4) Apply the laws of physics to fission, fusion and neutron physics problems;
5) Calculate the energy balance in a fusion reactor;
6) Identify and quantify the important plasma parameters associated with confinement reactor configurations;
7) Formulate the important engineering challenges for fusion reactors.
Omschrijving The aims of this lecture course are to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of nuclear energy (the concepts, systems
and applications) and enable them to apply such knowledge in future considerations about nuclear energy. After introducing
elements of nuclear physics and reactions, energy generation and energy sources will be discussed. The physics of fission reactors
will be addressed. This topic encompasses neutron physics, the nuclear fuel cycle, accidents and waste management. Finally, the
subject of fusion reactors will be approached via two examples, the Sun and the ITER project.

(Each of the sub-questions of the written exams has a specified weight expressed in points. The first and final exams count for 20% and 60% of the final mark, respectively. The final grade should be higher than 5.5.)
