Leerdoelen The student will gain the latest insights on how nutrition regulates metabolism and how unbalanced nutrition may lead to disease. Furthermore, the student will learn about sophisticated research technologies applied in the field. The student will perform nutrition studies in humans and animals and will present the outcome of the scientific research in written reports.
Omschrijving The importance of nutrition for the development of mostly chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and obesity is well recognized nowadays. The knowledge on how nutrition may benefit health and healthy aging is increasing steadily. Many regulatory mechanisms exist in the body that determine the storage and catabolism of food components used for energy supply. In addition, food contains micronutrients and bioactive compounds that provide protective effects against damaging products of metabolism such as oxygen radicals. After finishing this course, students will have gained knowledge on:
1: processes and regulatory mechanisms involved in metabolism
2: research strategies that are applied to obtain a better understanding of the relationship between nutrition, metabolism and disease
3: performing nutrition studies in humans and animals
4: presenting the outcome of scientific research in written reports
