Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. Obtain state-of-the-art knowledge on immune-mediated diseases and novel immunotherapeutic strategies to control these diseases; develop competence to independently and critically read scientific literature.
2. Develop competence to place literature in a broader perspective and to formulate an own scientific opinion thereon.
3. Develop competence to effectively communicate the acquired knowledge in writing (editorial) and orally (presentation).
Omschrijving The immune system is critical for combating infectious diseases, and its activity can be exploited for the prevention or treatment of numerous diseases, including cancer. However, dysregulated activity of the immune system lies at the heart of the pathogenesis of numerous diseases, including auto-immunity, allergy, asthma, and inflammatory diseases of the gastro-intestinal tract. Our insight into the immunological basis of these diseases and the possibilities for rational design of innovative therapeutic strategies for their prevention or treatment is progressing at a rapid pace.

In this course, students will obtain fundamental and clinical state-of-the-art knowledge regarding immune-mediated diseases and associated novel therapeutic strategies. They will become familiar with cutting edge research, as it is currently being performed in the field. This knowledge will be imparted by overview lectures given by expert principal investigators of the UMCG and the RUG, while young PostDocs/PhD students and doctors will present cutting-edge research as it is currently being performed in these research groups.

To deepen their insight, students will read and analyze a recent research paper related to the immune-mediated diseases presented by the research groups. After receiving instruction on writing an editorial, they will write an editorial on their respective research paper, analyzing its strengths and weaknesses and interpreting the relevance of the paper for the field. Students will also obtain instruction in effective presentation skills, which they will apply during a closing symposium, when they will present their findings.
