Leerdoelen This is an advanced course on Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine and builds on the principles of regenerative medicine.

1) After the course, the student is able to find and read high impact papers on Regenerative Medicine and understands and can discuss the principles and applications of stem cells in Regenerative Medicine in a broad sense.

2) After the course, the student is able to work in teams to develop solutions for clinical problems based on stem cells and regenerative medicine.

3) After the course the student can present his/her knowledge of stem cells and regenerative medicine to scientific peers both verbally, as a poster and in written text.

During the course the student shows progression in acquired knowledge through performance in intermediate digital tests (Socrative).
Omschrijving Week 1
Monday: 1 h introduction lecture, followed by assignment to probe the general knowledge of Regenerative Medicine (via groupwise Mindmapping). Selection of topics (total 4 h). Afternoon: see below.
Mornings: 15 min digital test on the review of the day (using Socrative), 1 h lecture on the theme of the day, 2 h: presentations of the papers, 1 h working in groups (assignment)
Afternoons: 3 h self-study + 1 h preparation of presentations and final report
Themes: Stem cell differentiation, Mesenchymal stem cells, Stem cell niche, Stem cells and extracellular matrix

Week 2
Mornings: 15 min digital test on the review of the day (using Socrative), 1 h lecture on the theme of the day, 2 h: presentations of the papers, 1 h working in groups (assignment)
Afternoons: 3 h self-study + 1 h preparation of presentations and final report.
Themes: Materials as stem cell regulators, Stem cells as immunomodulators, Stem cells and microRNAs, Stem cell methodology, Stem cells and physical force

Week 3
Monday and Tuesday:
Mornings: 15 min digital test on the review of the day (using Socrative), 1 h lecture on the theme of the day, 2 h: presentations of the papers, 1 h working in groups (assignment)
Afternoons: 3 h self-study + 1 h preparation of presentations and final report
Themes: Wound healing, Foreign Body Reaction
Wednesday and Thursday: preparation of posters and reports
Friday: Postersymposium

Each day two papers will be presented and critically discussed, on a specific theme and to be prepared and presented by the assigned group of students. One paper will be a review paper that all students have to read and prepare, and which will be assessed by a short digital test (Socrative) before the presentations every day. The second paper will be a paper to be selected by the group on an application in Regenerative Medicine of the day theme.

The overall (group)assignment will comprise of the generation of an innovative approach or therapy, based on stem cells and regenerative medicine, for the treatment of a particular disease or pathology. The results will be presented as a poster and as a short written (group)report.

Entreevoorwaarden For participation in the course the student is expected to have, or acquire alongside of the course, a thorough knowledge on Bachelor level or higher of disciplines/topics that support Regenerative Medicine. These include: physiology, immunology, molecular and cellular biology – principles of stem cells, signal transduction, developmental biology, basic knowledge of biomaterials to mention a few.
