Leerdoelen In this course you will attend scientific seminars related to healthy ageing and the biology of ageing. By doing so, you will become experienced in grasping the key message of scientific seminars and assess their quality. At the end of the course you will be able to:
1) Formulate the main (take home) message of a scientific seminar in 2-3 sentences.
2) Summarize and evaluate one seminar in the form of a mini-essay (report).
3) Formulate follow up questions and formulate means to address these.
4) Assess the scientific qualities, work and track record of the presenting researcher and by placing the discussed work into the current state of the art.
5) Discuss the scientific contents of a seminar and convince your fellow students of your personal assessment of the seminars.
6) Assess the current state-of-the-art of the research field on the selected topic, based on the seminars attended, and present and discuss this with your fellow students.
Omschrijving This course will teach students how to prepare for attendance of scientific seminars given by eminent researchers, how to extract all relevant information from seminars and how to place the presented scientific content into the context of the field. The course will start with an introduction lecture, explaining the learning goals and practicalities of the course and addressing general background in this field, thus providing a scientific framework for the upcoming seminars. At the beginning of the course, you select 5 seminars from the weekly UMCG Molecular Medicine seminars series that includes a wide selection of seminars related to the field of Healthy Ageing. Prior to the seminars, you will prepare the seminar by literature study including two recent reviews of the presenter’s field of research, and by submitting a preparatory report. After the seminar, you will write a full report. You will participate actively during the discussion part of the seminar and will get the opportunity to meet the speaker following the seminar.
During the first semester, you will select the topic of 1 of the attended seminars and select additional papers and reviews to expand your knowledge on the topic. You will very briefly discuss your choice in a short oral presentation and receive feedback. Afterwards, in semester 2A, you will prepare a presentation on this topic and discuss your topic with your peers and the coordinators. This presentation will cover an overview of the additional literature and the state-of-the art, and future perspectives in the field. There will be fixed dates for these short and end presentations. You are expected to attend the short presentations session, and at least 3 end presentation sessions and participate actively in the discussion. The interactions with researchers in the field of Healthy Aging provide good opportunities for students to orient themselves for putative master projects.

You are expected to contribute to these sessions as well by asking questions to your fellow students. Reports determine 50% of the final grade; the oral presentation determines 50%)

When oversubscribed, interested students will be asked to send a brief motivation letter (max. 150 words) to the coordinator of the module on which they will be selected.
