Leerdoelen In this course you will attend scientific seminars related to healthy ageing and the biology of ageing. By doing so, you will become experienced in grasping the key message of scientific seminars and assess their quality. At the end of the course you will be able to:
- Reproduce the main (take home) message of a scientific seminar in 2-3 sentences.
- Summarize the contents of a scientific seminar in a clear and brief (~1/2 page) abstract.
- Extend on presented work by proposing suitable follow up experiments.
- Assess the scientific qualities of the presenting researcher and the work discussed by summarizing the track record of the researcher and by placing the discussed work into the current state of the art.
- Discuss the scientitic contents of a seminar and convince your fellow students your personal assessment of a seminar.
- Have increased your personal scientific network.
Omschrijving The course will start with an introduction explaining the learning goals and practicalities of the course and a lecture addressing general background in this field thus providing a scientific framework for the upcoming seminars. Next, you will attend 8 seminars in the field of Healthy Ageing addressing various highlights in the field over the course of a year. There will be a wide selection of seminars (~30-40) to pick from so that you can choose subjects you like best. You will prepare the seminar by literature study. You will participate actively during the discussion part of the seminar and will get the opportunity to meet the speaker following the seminar. This is also an excellent moment to network and to find out about the possibilities for an internship if you are particularly excited about the work presented. Throughout the year, all students will have to give an oral presentation addressing some of the scientific highlights and experienced learning outcomes. There will be three-four fixed dates for these presentations, on which you are expected to be present and participate actively in the discussion. The contacts and interactions with teachers and seminar speakers in the field of Healthy Aging are ideal for students to network and orient themselves for putative master projects, either within RUG/UMCG or elsewhere.

(7 reports (50%) and 1 oral presentation (50%). You will give 1 presentation and attend 3 presentation sessions where other students will present. You are expected to contribute to these sessions as well by asking questions to your fellow students. Reports determine 50% of the final grade; the oral presentation determines 50%.)
