Uitgebreide vaknaam Cognitive Neuropsychiatry: Neuropsychology of Psychopathology
Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) describe neuroanatomical and neurocognitive models/hypotheses underlying prominent symptoms in psychiatric disorders;
2) translate research questions with regard to prominent psychiatrics symptoms into hypotheses that can be tested
within the context of the cognitive neuropsychiatry approach;
3) analyse important similarities and differences between hypotheses/ neurocognitive models explaining different
symptomatology;
4) design and present new research questions and research plan based on existing cognitive neuropsychiatric
hypotheses/models;
5) judge the merits of using functional neuroimaging techniques for the advances in psychiatry, but also be able to defend the methodology despite important caveats.
Omschrijving In this course the focus is on hallmark symptoms occuring in the following psychiatric disorders: schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders, attention-deficit disorder and autism. The neurocognitive mechanisms thought to underlie disruptions in perception, mood regulation, threat sensitivity, attention, and social behavior will be discussed.
Thereby, students will acquire knowledge and insight into the cognitive and neurobiological mechanisms that underlie psychiatric symptoms. During the lectures, the readers will present a comprehensive overview of the literature and competing neurocognitive theories that serve as frameworks to study the psychiatric abnormalities. Implications for treatment options will also be discussed.
During these lectures, ample attention will be given to the advantages and caveats of using neuroimaging techniques to study neuropsychiatric disorders. During the workshops, students will learn to critically evaluate literature and to use the presented material to formulate new research questions and research plans. Forms of discussion will include a debate and presenting a
scientific poster with new research ideas.

Toetsvorm Opdracht (AST), Presentatie (P), Schriftelijk tentamen (WE)
(Grade = 0.6 x written examination (5 open questions and 10 MC questions) + 0.1 x essay + 0.3 oral presentation. All assignments and the written exam should be higher than 5.5. in order to pass.)
