Leerdoelen Functional Neuroscience gives an overview of available methods to measure and evaluate brain function, by means of both theoretical lectures and hands-on experience. Brain-imaging Methods focussed on this course are fMRI, and EEG.
After the EEG part of the course, participants will have a basic understanding of theoretical concepts underlying EEG recordings, be acquainted with EEG hard- and software and will be able to analyze EEG data using Brain Vision Analyzer.
The second part of the course offers students practical experience in setting up, running and analyzing an fMRI experiment.
Omschrijving EEG Part (3 ECTS):
Besides treating theoretical backgrounds of EEG measures participants will become acquainted with EEG hard- and software in the EEG part of the course. The EEG part of the course also consists of an introduction into Brain Vision Analyzer, which will allow all students to analyse the data they recorded on previous days.
Topics for the EEG part of the course are:
• EEG backgrounds, EEG recording and EEG analysis techniques
• Clinical applications of EEG
• Setting-up an ERP experiment
• Executing an ERP experiment
• Getting acquainted with the EEG-lab at the NiC and executing first recordings
• Getting acquainted with Brain Vision Analyzer software (EEG analysis) and analysis of data recorded on previous days.
fMRI Part (2 ECTS):
In the second part of the course, the students will learn how to run an fMRI experiment. This fMRI practical is also offered in the functional neuroscience course of the N-track.
The goal is to conduct the complete cycle of an fMRI experiment, that is from stimulus preparation via data acquisition to data analysis using spm2 and presentation of results.
Students will be split up in groups of 4 people. During the course each group will give two 20 min presentations and write an article describing the experiment and results.

(The examination of the EEG part of the course cannot be taken before the practicum is successfully completed. A passing grade for the EEG part of the course requires that you both satisfactorily complete the assignment(s) during the practicum, and fully participate during all meetings.)
