Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1.independently derive the most significant and unresolved research questions from the most recent literature on a specific field of research.
2.consult with peers and teachers to develop a research approach by which the identified research question can be clarified.
3.reflect critically on their own and others' chosen research approaches, and is able to explain and defend this.
Omschrijving This course is designed for obtaining insights into the mechanisms of bacterial cell envelope biogenesis and organelle biogenesis in eukaryotes

The course is organized according to the "flip-the-class room" concept. Each student carries out independently a literature study within one of the course subjects. Students are individually guided in this process. The student explores and examines the state-of-art "in the field of research, and makes a hypothesis on an open research question that can be tested experimentally. The literature findings, the hypothesis and the possible experimental approach are presented by the students and critically discussed among the students.

The practical is a brief introduction into scientific research taking notice of actual research questions and employ the necessary experimental operations.

Study: literature
The course covers a period of 3 weeks within which twice a one week period for the a theoretical part, consisting of literature research and individual counseling. Each week of the theoretical part is finalized with an oral presentation and active discussion among the students about the topic, issues raised and the chosen experimental approach. The theoretical part concludes with practical work of one week.

Implement the literature assignment, initiative and creativity in formulating the research question and associated experimental approach; oral presentation and involvement in subsequent open discussion

The course assumes prior knowledge of the subject Microbiology Genetics Research and / or Molecular Cell Biology Research and / or Cell Biology II courses or equivalent Biology and LST students, Molecular and Cellular Microbiology and Molecular Cell Biology course.
Opmerkingen Study load: In total 140 hours of which 70 hours are dedicated to the literature analysis including discussion with tutors / preparation of the presentation and 36 hours to practice.
