Omschrijving The Master thesis is considered the final element of the IR Master programme and the specialisation East Asian Studies. Nevertheless, students are allowed to write the thesis either before or after their placement/study abroad/third research seminar, provided that they have successfully completed ATIR and at least one IR research seminar within their specialisation.
The thesis is based on advanced general knowledge about International Relations (by means of the ATIR course) and specific knowledge about East Asian Studies (by means of the course Methodology of East Asian Studies and the Research Seminars).
The Master thesis should be a well-reasoned argument based on the student’s own analysis of a politically or socially relevant issue in international relations, related to the student’s specialisation. The thesis should be the outcome of a substantial study of relevant literature and sources, feedback and synthesis, and its theoretical underpinnings. The thesis research should make use of international relations theory or related theory, and of social science or -historical methodology. An interdisciplinary approach will generally improve the content of the thesis.
An IRIO lecturer will supervise the student during the preparation and writing of the thesis. This first supervisor will also assess and mark the thesis on the basis of various predetermined criteria, after which a second reader will confirm the assessment and grading.
