Omschrijving Civil wars have become the most common form of war in the post-Cold war period with devastating human, political and economic consequences. Why do civil wars occur? How do combatants and unarmed civilians make choices during civil wars? How do wars end? This course focuses on two dimensions of civil wars. The first part explores and evaluates critically general questions about the causes of civil wars. The second part discusses the choices and relationships between combatants and civilians in war contexts. We will approach relevant concepts such as state-building, ethnicity and ideology. We then turn to key issues such as violence against civilians, rebel governance, forced displacement, civilian cooperation and resistance, and the role of natural resources and illicit drugs. The course will guide students in developing research questions, as well as theoretical and empirical analysis of cases.
