Leerdoelen | Upon successful completion of the course unit, students are able to: 1. Display knowledge about international and domestic security. (E1, E4, E5) 2. Produce a practical assignment on international and domestic security with a clearly formulated problem definition, using one or more theories, methods, or techniques suitable for the field concerned. (E6a, E6b, E7, E8, E9) 3. Evaluate research in a critical and substantiated manner, as well as in a way that respects scientific, social and ethical responsibilities. (E10) 4. The ability to deliver a research presentation and express himself/herself in a clear and coherent manner, both in oral and in written/typed form, using understandable and correct English. (E12, E14,E15) 5. Become self-reliant and reliable in the execution of the tasks belonging to this course unit.(E13) |

Omschrijving | The aim of this core module is to introduce participants to different aspects of critical security studies by inviting them to reflect on what critique is and how security is a window to our societies. The rest of the core module will then be dedicated to session based on the participants' interests. Themes that can be treated and will be decided upon by the participants are: police and policing, war, terrorism and asymmetric conflicts, identity and othering, gender and sexuality, nationalism, xenophobia, racism, development, health, property, extraction, accumulation, digital security, surveillance, security design, weapon systems, the environment, borders, mobilities (e.g., migration), prisons. Through each themes, participants will be invited to reflect on one or multiples modalities of analysis such visual security studies, sonic security studies, human security, ethnographic methods, or discourse analysis. | ||||||||||||

Entreevoorwaarden | Students must have obtained the propaedeutic certificate. In the second year of the Bachelor, 10 ECTS must have been obtained in non-language modules, as well as TIR and MRP. | ||||||||||||

If you are planning to participate in a Core Module (and BA Thesis), you should enrol as follows: 1) In the progress enrollment period you should enrol for the general Core Module course (LYX139B10) and Bachelor Thesis (LYX999B10) in Progress. 2) In the seminar enrollment period you should enroll for a specific Core Module topic via the general Core Module nestor course page (similar to a seminar group enrolment). You will be placed for the group you enrol for. There are a limited number of places, so make sure to register early! For this course attendance is mandatory. |
