Omschrijving This course familiarizes students with the theoretical, practical, and policy issues to do with state break-up and state creation. After introducing concepts and instances of secession and self-determination in a historical perspective, the course will focus on the role of nationalism and rebellion in such phenomena. International responses to separatism and de facto statehood will feature prominently. Deep consideration will be given to theories of sovereignty and statehood itself. Students will explore and analyse particular case studies in written essays and presentations.
