Omschrijving This core module seeks to provide students with the analytical tools to understand the interplay of international law and geopolitics, and to link this to historical and current international dynamics. In a first step, we will familiarize ourselves with current debates in the academic fields of geopolitics and the politics of international law and try to bring these often-separate fields together by asking, for example, whether international law operates as an instrument of power politics or actually tames these dynamics. We will discuss in this context also the limits and possibilities of interdisciplinary research as well as develop a conceptual vocabulary to investigate projects in the intersection of international law and geopolitics. We will then, in a second step, turn to a variety of historical and current examples like the use of extraterritorial jurisdiction by European powers in China, Japan and the Ottoman Empire during the nineteenth century, the debate in the first part of the twentieth century on whether the United States should follow a ‘legalistic moralistic approach to international politics’ and, more recently, the emergence of ‘lawfare’ in the context of the debate on humanitarian interventions or the judicio-political infrastructure of current geo-economic projects.
