Omschrijving Contemporary China-EU relations are marked by ambitious rhetoric, deep economic interdependence and a tightening web of bilateral dialogue mechanisms. At the same time, however, there are profound divergences in terms of interests and expectations between the two sides. This constrains cooperation and periodically leads to tensions. The course will explore this dual nature of the ties between China and the EU by analysing their economic and political dimensions, wider strategic implications, as well as issues of policy making and diplomatic interaction. The focus is not on IR theories, although theoretical approaches will come up in the readings and in class discussions. The first half of the semester will be devoted to weekly class sessions during which the assigned literature (3-4 articles per week) will be discussed. Students will contribute presentations on topics related to the literature. In the second half students will work on individual research projects and present their draft papers during a final paper symposium. To get full credit for the course students will have to: participate actively in class discussion (incl. presentations), hand in weekly written comments on the readings, pass a written exam at the end of the first block, and write a final paper that receives a passing grade.
