Leerdoelen 1. (E3d) Knowledge and understanding of the theories and models of international economics. In seminars, students will read articles in the field of International Political Economy and will familiarize themselves with topics such as globalization, trade, development and development aid, welfare state, and labour rights in a globalized world.

2. (E5) Knowledge of methods of historical, legal, social-scientific and national/international economic research. The course delves into the methodological issues such as experimental and observational studies, sampling strategy, and hypothesis testing. In seminars, students will apply the methodological discussions into selected articles.

3. (E8) Mastery of generic academic skills such as logical reasoning, the ability to adduce arguments, the ability to arrange unstructured problems in an academic way. In the lectures, students will learn concepts such as distribution, sampling, data categories, hypothesis testing and regression analysis. Every week builds on the previous one in such a way helping students gain a systematic understanding of the scientific inquiry and especially quantitative reasoning.

4. (E16) Ability to effectively use IT applications. In the seminars and lectures, students will learn to use and interpret the output from software programmes such as Excel and Stata and use and interpret visual representations of data such as histograms, linear graphs, and scatter plots.
Omschrijving This is an introductory course to statistics specifically targeted for International Relations students. The course offers an introduction to the concepts and application of statistics. It has three core components: (i) data description (proficient use of measures of central tendency and dispersion such as mean, median, mode, and standard deviation as well as appropriate use of histograms, scatter plots, bar charts etc. for data visualisation); (ii) statistical calculation and hypothesis testing (such as using z-test, t-test, ANOVA, chi-square, and linear regression); and (iii) statistical interpretation (interpretation of Stata output and application of hypothesis testing to concrete research questions). This is a practice-oriented course where students learn by doing. Weekly lectures introduce the topic, while seminars focus on application through examples and exercises. The statistical software, Stata, is used throughout the course. Participation in both weekly lectures and weekly seminars is compulsory. This is a course where each week builds on the previous one that culminate in equipping students with quantitative research skills and reasoning.
