Leerdoelen 1) To develop a reflexive attitude towards scientific endeavour and knowledge (e5; e7; e8; e10);

2) To acquire structuring knowledge regarding central questions of epistemology and methodology in social sciences and, beyond, International Relations as a field of study (e6a, b; e7; e10);

3) To acquire a reflexive and autonomous attitude towards scientific knowledge acquisition and production through multiple written assignments (e5; e6a, b; e7; e8; e10; e12; e15; e16);

4) To acquire specific research as well as academic skills enabling the engagement with and the production of scholarly formulated arguments and reasoning in written and oral form (e6 a, b; e7; e8; e12; e15; e16).
Omschrijving The principal objective of this course is to offer first year undergraduates with an introduction to key issues regarding some of the central epistemological and methodological questions students are likely to face during their studies. What is scientific knowledge? How do we understand its evolution and evaluate it? How can we know the social reality that surrounds us? How do we explain or understand it?, and finally, How does it connect to concrete research practices and attitudes? These are some of the structuring questions of Academic Skills for IR. More particularly, the aim is to engage students, in connection with the work they will produce and discussions they will have during the seminar attached to the course, to develop a reflexive attitude towards scientific endeavour as well as to science as a social endeavour.

Centrally, the aim is to introduce students to the necessity to approach, engage and justify theoretically, methodologically and/or empirically the knowledge they are confronted with, or they are producing, in order to distinguish it from and identify the incompatibilities with other false, more approximate, or common sensical (“it’s my opinion”) views on social reality. The course thus serves as a first stepping stone for IRIO’s students to develop their analytical aptitudes and skills that will be central in their studies.

(Assessment The overall mark will comprise two types of assessment: 1) A written examination (digital examination) on the course and course material: 30% of the overall mark; 2) two written assessments developed during the seminar: 70% of the overall mark. Any compulsory texts will be announced during the first session of the course)
