Leerdoelen | On completion of this course, students will have a developed a clear understanding of different forms of public engagement, the impacts of particular design features, and appreciation of their relationship with broader questions concerning the democratic and policy-making process.
Omschrijving | The course focuses on the lack of trust in public institutions as well as on the perceived democratic deficit in the European Union, and discusses the most popular developments that have taken place across Europe in order to tackle this problem. Building on democratic theory, the course offers a methodological and empirical account of innovations including mini-publics and citizens’ juries, online consultations and broader institutional reforms. It bridges the gap between research and practice in public engagement including the application of deliberative methods, providing a basis for understanding the democratic and policy making context in which different forms of public engagement occur, as well their strengths and weaknesses.
