Omschrijving This course focuses on the contemporary Middle East through the lenses of the language/culture/ identity paradigm. Historical, political, socio-economic, cultural and religious developments in countries and societies in the Middle East will be analysed through this angle. The lectures introduce themes that are decisive for the contemporary Middle East: language and identity, language and religion, language and conflicts, language and nationalism, language and minorities, cultural diversity of the contemporary MENA (Middle East and North Africa). It also offers insight into the complex cultural power relations at stake in the use and control of various languages and linguistic registers in the region. It engages with an eclectic selection of objects, texts, cultural and linguistic practices, with a critical eye for the power relations involved in their production, circulation and reception. Rather than an historical or geographical overview, this course provides an orientation for the pursuit of students’ own interests in Middle Eastern cultures and languages.
