| Leerdoelen | To acquire analytical tools for researching identity. To be acquainted with 'identity theory', 'social identity theory', and concepts of Culture and Cognition. To apply the tool to the study of identity in the Middle East. To apply the tool to the study of literary works. To be acquainted with identity issued in the Palestinian and Palestinian-Israeli context. |

| Omschrijving | The course focuses on forming identity which is associated with the Middle East. The first focus is on Middle Eastern literature as a locus of creating and expressing identity, and the second focus is on testimonies of Western people about conversion into and out of Islam. The students will acquire analytical expertise in the discourse analysis as described in the book “Text World Theory: An Introduction” by Joanna Gavins, will learn about Identity Theory and Social Identity Theory, and will also learn some basic concepts of the Culture and Cognition approach. The student will be able to set up and conduct research independently in accordance with the expected level of a 3rd year of the BA. |

| Opmerkingen | 80% Aanwezigheidsplicht bij werkcolleges. Studenten worden geacht actief te participeren in alle werkcolleges en alle opdrachten buiten de colleges tijdig en correct uit te voeren. Dit vak staat open als bijvak en Open College. Hoofdvakstudenten hebben voorrang op bijvakstudenten. |
