Omschrijving | Arts in Practice / Film group: Videographic Criticism: Students learn to use, and thereby sharpen their analytical skills in the context of practical audiovisual projects. Parallel to the acquirement of knowledge on historical aspects and current debates and practices of videographic work, the course comprises three distinct practice-based parts (Projects 1-3), ultimately aiming at theoretical considerations (Final Report). 1. Project 1: Audiovisual plot summary: Students learn the basics of video manipulation (accessing, ripping, editing, compressing, voice-over, etc. AV material) by producing a brief (max. 5 minutes) audiovisual summary of a film or TV show of their choice. 2. Project 2: Analytical videographic work: Students further their acquired audio and video manipulation skills by producing an autonomous, explanatorily argumentative academic (scholarly sound) research video (scene analysis in max. 10 minutes). 3. Project 3: Deformative criticism project: Students engage in an experimental mode of videographic criticism, as Jason Mittell puts it, “to make the original work strange in some unexpected way, deforming it unconventionally to reveal its structure and discover something new from it.” 4. At the end of the semester, students individually produce a Final Report that reflects on the theoretical knowledge they acquired during their practical tinkering (max. 2 A4 per student). |
