They are able to describe, in general terms, different methods of quantitative and qualitative research and their specific characteristics and qualities to a general audience, and to develop basic quantitative and qualitative research methods to assess the occurrence of the values of aesthetic experience. |
Omschrijving |
This course provides an introduction into empirical research methods, related to the study of the arts in society, with a special focus on arts policy (institutions) and arts education. The course integrates the sociological and cognitive perspectives on the arts. The focus is on identifying the social and cognitive dimensions of the arts which are of importance for arts policy and arts education. Students are introduced to three complementary empirical approaches: the setting up and processing of surveys that capture the values of aesthetic experience (using SPSS), interviewing respondents in the field, and critical discourse analysis of policy documents (data processing through Atlas.ti). These methods are then applied in small case studies, analysing how the art experience is addressed in arts policy and in arts education. |
