Omschrijving | This course takes as its foundational question: How do formal and stylistic elements shape the meaning of a film? This question will inform the in-class discussions of seven challenging but compelling films, chosen on account of their significance within the history of cinema. The seven films will be approached primarily as examples of various components of film form and style, such as cinematography, editing, mise-en-scène, narration, and sound. The emphasis will shift throughout the course from learning basic terms of film analysis to considering how these elements work together to create meaning. While Bordwell and Thompson’s Film Art textbook will serve as our primary point of reference, we will also read selected essays on key topics such as race, gender, and sexuality. | ||||||||
