Omschrijving The objective of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the theoretical, conceptual and methodological tools used to frame film and media research. “Nothing is more practical than a good theory,” as the saying goes. Therefore, the lectures will offer an overview of the most important film theories; and discuss the key texts, steering paradigms, basic assumptions, and key concepts that have shaped the field of film and media theory.
The different phases and theoretical paradigms to be examined in this course are (among others): Russian Formalism, Constructivism, and Neoformalism; Early Cinema-Going Theories; Critical Theory; Apparatus Theory; Feminist Film Theory; Theories of Technology and (Experimental) Media Archaeology; Modern Media Theory and the dynamics between contemporary Film and Television Theory.
