Omschrijving What role can cinema play for and in social change? What kind of influence do films have? How can cinema be seen or act as a political actor in the world? We begin this graduate seminar by thinking through the basic suppositions on which these questions are based. What are the premises for (and is there evidence to justify) the assumption that cinema has any kind of impact or influence on viewers’ behaviour in the “real world”?
We will approach and explore the relationship of film and social change from a variety of angles: from films that offer different identity positions and experiences of the world in terms of gender, ethnicity, race, or class; films that (have come to) function as archival and history-telling devices that shape collective and counter-hegemonic memories; to environmental cinema, which poses questions on how nonhuman time and the Anthropocene can be included and depicted in fiction cinema. We will also look into cinema’s tenuous relationship as a commodity and entertainment product that circulates in global capitalist, industrial and institutional infrastructures, and how this may impact the positions films can take up vis-à-vis issues they seek to expose or criticize.
Following on from the idea of cinema as world-making, we will look at films made by and about communities which have historically been marginalized in film production; and we consider film as an educational, creative and subjectivity-shaping part of culture. We will explore the changing meaning of a film over time and changing contexts with the examples of The Battle of Algiers, and The Battle of Chile and consider potential parallels to today’s activist film making.
