Omschrijving | Scholars from many different disciplines – philosophy, anthropology, psychology, literary studies, cognitive sciences… - have advanced the claim that narrative art works as a moral laboratory and fulfils an important role in transmitting and also questioning values, attitudes and ways of world-making. More specifically, this narrative laboratory has been repeatedly linked to the notion of identity: narrative may serve, both as a means to organise and express our identity, and as a means to experiment with who we are and who we could be. For such claims, various explanations are offered, which usually are connected to specific narrative devices (emplotment, character, perspective, etc.). During this course, we will consider such claims and submit them to critical reflection, after first gaining (further) understanding of the concepts of narrative and identity by reading several classic texts on these topics. |
