Omschrijving | This 7-week seminar aims to shed light on the role of the beautiful in film. While a key concept in the history of aesthetics, the beautiful rarely figures in scholarly work on the cinema. To make room for it, we will ask ourselves questions such as: - When can a film be called beautiful? - What are the benefits of being confronted with beauty in films? - Why are discussions so often restricted to the physical beauty of actors? - What might moral beauty mean in films? To this end, we will read classical and more recent texts, which may include philosophers and theorists such as Edmund Burke, Immanuel Kant, Béla Balázs, Elaine Scarry, Alexander Nehamas, Patrick Colm Hogan or Bence Nanay. We will also compare the beautiful to related and opposing aesthetic concepts such as the moving, the cute, the kitschy, the interesting, the ugly, the sublime, or the uncanny. Not least, the seminar contains screenings of (scenes from) classical and contemporary films by directors like Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, Stan Brakhage, Wong-kar Wai, Todd Haynes, Terrence Malick, Paolo Sorrentino, Céline Sciamma or Olivier Assayas. Students interested in this course need to buy Bence Nanay's Aesthetics: A Very Brief Introduction (Oxford University Press, 2019) and read pp. 1-71 before the first seminar session! |
