Leerdoelen The student is able to critically assess existing research in the field of narrative theory, ethics and identity. The student is able to design interpretive and/or (qualitative and/or quantitative) empirical research in the field of arts, narrative, identity and ethics. The student is able to clearly and succinctly present his/her scientific or scholarly findings orally (presentation) and in written form (paper) to an audience of peers.
Omschrijving It has been claimed that (some) narrative art works as a moral laboratory and fulfills an important role in transmitting and questioning values, attitudes and ways of world-making. What would make narrative, and narrative art, a suitable instrument for value explorations? And how could we investigate claims that are made about narrative as a “laboratory” in which we experiment with values and identities, with, perhaps, some ethical benefit? A number of cases will form our point of departure. For our analyses we will draw on an interdisciplinary framework of theories and methods, which range from hermeneutic approaches to cognitive narrative theory and empirical research on the connection between narrative art, values and ethics.
