Leerdoelen Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to:
1. demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of adaptation theory and its methodological approach to contemporary artistic production and reception.
2. demonstrate a clear understanding of complex processes of adaptation in relation to the development of artistic media and the consolidation of the creative industries in contemporary Western and globalised contexts.
3. develop a historical perspective of adaptation through considering different responses to originality and authorship in artistic and cultural discourses of the past.
4. show an understanding of the aesthetic and emotional function of adaptation alongside its economic, cultural, and political impact.
Omschrijving Although adaptation is not new to our time, it has recently emerged as a common dramaturgical method and a key mode of cultural production. Whilst adapted works are popular with audiences, adaptation is often regarded as a profit-driven enterprise, recycling past material and capitalising on its familiarity, rather than creating anew. The course seeks to analyse adaptation in relation to the production and reception of creative works. Students will engage in an in-depth study of adaptation theory through an examination of discourses of originality, repetition, and creativity. Following an introductory session on the current place of adaptation within academia and the arts industry, we will interrogate the notions of authorship and textual ownership and authority. Students will discuss the use of stories, characters, and themes across media, looking at case studies taken from theatre, literature, film, and digital media. The discussion of the case studies will focus on the dominant adaptation strategies employed in pop culture and radical reconfigurations of the canonical plays, especially Greek tragedy and Shakespeare.
