Omschrijving | The course examines the development of theatre forms from the eighteenth to the twenty-first century. Students will form an understanding of the cultural, political, and material contexts in which theatre is embedded, placing the emphasis on the shifts from print to visual and media cultures, and exploring their impact on theatre as a medium. The course examines different forms of the performing arts, such as stagings of dramatic texts, dance and music theatre, and performance art, whilst taking account of the dialogues between theatre and new media that gave rise to radio and television drama and, more recently, multimedia and digital performances. In conjunction with the historical overview, the course offers an introduction to key theoretical approaches in the study of the arts, e.g., semiotics, feminism, cognitive theory, audience reception, intermediality. These theoretical frameworks will enable students to analyse the theatrical event as complex system of cultural production that participates in cultural and social formations by shaping perceptions of self and other. | ||||||||||||
