Omschrijving | The course examines the key theories, practices, and artistic movements that shaped Western theatre and the performing arts from the end of the nineteenth century to the present. Recognising that modern theatre is underpinned by a longing for renewal, we shall look at the different ways in which directors, playwrights, and theatre makers conceptualised change and attempted to break new ground in theatrical representation. Special emphasis will be given to the rise of modernist and avant-garde movements and their significance in revolutionising theatre. Over the course, we shall explore the work of directors, playwrights, and theatre companies and collectives who sought ways to break with the staging conventions of their time and experimented with new forms and styles. More specifically, these developments will be examined in relation to the various attempts to challenge the dominance of the dramatic text by the historical avant-gardes (1910-1930), the neo-avant-gardes (1950-1960), and in postdramatic theatre. Through the study of play texts, critical essays and historical documents, students will engage with the changing views of theatre’s aesthetic, political, and social functions. The structure of the course does not adhere to a strictly chronological order but aims to draw links between the historical examples and contemporary performance practices. | ||||||||||||||||
