Leerdoelen • Acquire an advanced understanding of current discussions on the significance of death in social life, and the (changing) attitudes to death and the dead through time
• Develop skills to integrate material, bio-archaeological, textual and iconographic data in order to interpret mortuary practices, and to understand funerary ideologies from prehistory to the modern times
• Reflect about key theoretical issues underlying mortuary studies such as ritual, ideology and cosmology; materiality and monumentality; wealth, status and ostentation; agency and personhood; age and gender; health and disease; ethics of excavation, analysis and display of human remains.
• Be able to participate in debates on the interpretation of mortuary practices, and to present a case study convincingly, both orally and in writing.
