Omschrijving | Identity politics and culture wars A lot of contemporary political and public debates (from the #metoo and Black Pete discussions to populism and the ‘yellow vests’) revolve around matters of identity and culture. In this course I want to delve deeper in these matters, and try to critically ‘unpack’ some of these debates and look what is at stake. We will do that by, first, looking at historical and contemporary literature on the intersections of culture, identity and politics. Identity (in terms of gender, race, religious, national, class, etc.) has been studied extensively within the field of cultural studies and critical theory. Moreover, there is an interesting link between these academic debates and political and/or social activism, which often respond to and sometimes are inspired by one another. Secondly, we will look at ways in which contemporary cultural and artistic phenomena reflect on and intervene in these debates on cultural identity, in movies such as Get out!, novels such as Didier Eribon’s Returning to Reims, but also in internet fan and meme culture. Finally, we will explore some of the tensions and controversies within the debate on (cultural) identity, such as the tension between identity and class politics, or between free speech and so called ‘political correctness’. |
