Omschrijving This research seminar will explore the intersection of citizenship, human rights, identity and social subjectivity in international politics. We will attend to diverse understandings and practices of citizenship embedded in both the global North and the global South. We will explore citizenship as a way of governing individuals and populations and how policies related to citizenship can generate forms of exclusion and inclusion. At the same time, we will also examine social responses to various forms of exclusion and inequality; particular focus will be placed on socio-political and cultural rights struggles that are not necessarily territorially bound. Following the introductory discussions on the meaning, etymology and genealogies of citizenship and human rights, seminars will offer a detailed exploration of how citizenship and human rights are negotiated in the context of human mobility and migration, precarious existence, politics of belonging and political violence.

The seminar is organized as a dialogue between the instructors and students who are coming from various disciplines including cultural studies, international relations, literature, media studies, etc. We will use a diverse range of material including audiovisual material, podcasts, scholarly articles/books, literary works, etc. Next to joint readings/discussion of the teaching material, you will be given space and guidance to develop your own research projects that are linked to broader questions of citizenship, human rights, subjectivity and belonging.
