Leerdoelen Learn how to identify most bones, teeth, and major morphological features, of the human skeleton; practice sorting, siding and identification of human bone assemblages; learn the key methods for sex and age estimation; practice age and sex estimation on a skeleton from an archaeological context. Learn the main pathological lesions.
Omschrijving The human skeleton is one of the most important pieces to understanding the past, as it provides primary evidence of the people themselves.
The focus of this class is the identification of human skeletal and dental remains. Students will learn basic skeletal biology, how to identify all the bones and teeth in the human skeleton, techniques associated with estimating sex and age-at-death.
By the end of this class students will be able to distinguish animal from human bones, and identify fragmentary skeletal material, as is common in many archaeological settings. Each class will consist of a lecture and demonstration focusing on the skeletal elements and a session in the laboratory. You are expected to practice the identification of skeletal elements. This course places strong emphasis on laboratory assignments in order to teach students how to properly use and apply key methods.
