Leerdoelen After completing this course, students can:
I. Describe and explain the bi-/multilingual processing questions that inform psycho- and neurolinguistic research methods;
II. Argue and explain when and how the different behavioural experimental paradigms and neuroimaging methods can be used to address various questions related to bi-/multilingual language processing;
III. Indicate and explain the differences and similarities in language processing between monolinguals and bi-/multilinguals as evidenced by experimental behavioural and neuroimaging methods;
IV. Create the most commonly used behavioural experimental paradigms in OpenSesame;
V. Replicate an experimental psycho-/neurolinguistic study based on the information in a scientific article and conduct the study on a small scale;
VI. Write an empirical research report on the results of the study following APA guidelines.
Omschrijving We live in a world where most people are able to understand and/or speak two or more languages. With the advent of laboratory tools and techniques to investigate language performance across and within languages, recent years have seen a host of studies on the neural underpinnings and consequences of juggling two (or more) language systems. How do we keep our languages apart? How do we deal with words that look the same in different languages? How are the different languages represented and organised in our brains? What brain processes are involved when speaking or listening to language? And are these processes the same for our native and later learned languages? This course focuses on these questions and particularly on research methods and paradigms, both behavioural as well as neurolinguistic experimental methods, that have been used to answer them.
