Omschrijving | After the Reformation, Scripture was no longer just in a book, it was everywhere. Buildings, artefacts, and visual images displayed biblical texts, inviting the viewer/reader to reflect upon – and ultimately, embody – the Word of God. Individual and communal practices of reading, praying, singing and writing structured the lives of the faithful. Together, these different textual and artistic media helped sustain a religion that was not only practiced, but lived and experienced. In this course unit we explore this multimedia devotional culture from the Reformation to the present. Issues that will be addressed include: -artistic representations and interpretations of sacred texts -theological and political agendas and interpretation strategies -the liturgical and devotional contexts in which biblical texts are used, read or sung -scriptural models for devotion (e.g. the psalms) -the roles of the different media and their interaction We will analyze the interrelation of biblical texts and the arts across time periods, cultural and confessional boundaries (though with a focus on early modern Europe). Students will read and discuss texts, analyze visual images, architectural decorations and material objects. They write a paper in the field of their major: religious studies or art history. |
