Beyond Antiquity: Visual Arts 400-1400 |
Leerdoelen |
Be able to analyse artworks and to tell their date and place of origin; be familiar with the development of the arts over the period 400-1400; be able to understand artworks within the historical context in which they were created. |
Omschrijving |
In this course we will study the development of the arts in the period from c. 400 to 1400 from the point of view: how did they convey the evolving teachings of the Church? How can we understand and ‘explain’ stylistic and iconographic changes in the arts in relation to advancing theological notions and ideas? Are developing theological notions the only ‘explanation’ for changes in the arts or did other factors also play a role, as for instance the discovery of new materials or the ambitions of profane institutions and persons, such as city councils and noblemen? |
