Leerdoelen |
The participants acquire basic knowledge of architectural history and an insight into the development of European architecture up to the Middle Ages. They will be able to use the relevant terminology to analyse and interpret buildings and will be able to identify chronologically and geographically typical buildings and their respective periods. |
Omschrijving |
The course is an introduction to the history of architecture and provides an overview of the built environment from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. The focus is on Europe, although global examples are also included for a more comprehensive understanding. In addition to sacred architecture, the development of distinctive secular architecture in the late Middle Ages as the formative years of the modern era is also addressed.
In the tutorials, technical terms and the analysis of architecture are covered and aspects such as liturgical function, symbolic meanings, building techniques and the emergence of cities as hotspots of a new urban culture are discussed. Students must prepare by reading a selection of texts, both source material in translation and secondary literature. |
